I think it is ridiculous, I drive a tenny tiny nissan centra and sat it was on E and I went to fill it up and I stopped it at $35.00 cause I was like OMG is this damn thing ever going to stop. Someone said a while back on a question like this that they were going to by a horse and I am getting to that point

Well, I hate it too, but affordable gas isn't actually a human right, is it? Maybe it will force us to think about alternatives, like adensmomma06 and her horse!

Affordable gas isnt a human right, but as gas prices go up so does everything else, including necessities like food... In addition, gas prices are going up everywhere including in places that can ill afford it, like third world countries, and it is the poorest people who are suffering for it. Landlocked countries like the one I grew up in have no choice but to get stuff in either by plane or trucks, and with gas prices going up, these supplies become more expensive and harder to get a hold of.

I think its ridiculas it takes us like 60 to fill ours up, its so stupid, I think we all should get bikes or horses and put the oil companies overseas out of business lol yea I know that will never happen but its just a thought lol...instead of drilling over there, there's enough here that will last us a lifetime but they wont b/c of tree huggers...screw them (sorry if it offends) I tired of these prices

Ty's answer is great - the 'Big Picture'. We do need to question our own dependence on cars and trucks, because as you're all saying, there are quite often other ways for us to get around. But affordable transportation is something we rely on for our work and our food, and some remote areas depend on it more than others.

high gas prices do affect every part of our lives. but the dependence on oil is our own fault. we have built cities that make it virtually impossible to run errands without a car, have allowed the train system to fail, purchased bigger cars (don't get me started on SUVs) and continued to turn a blind eye to the need for research to find alternative energy sources. it also didn't help that we elected an 'oil man' into the white house, twice...

Ya that is so true!! Well then why don't you think our government is not doing anything about this! If other people need it more than us well the freakin government should put a stop to it or double or actually tripple our salarys!

Like others have said cheap gasoline is not a human right.

The problem is that gas prices have shot up faster than consumers can adjust their behavior. If gas prices went up gradually than most people would start buying smaller and/or less powerful vehicles, moving closer to where they worked, telecommute more often etc. Someone who bought a Chevy Surburban a few years ago hasn't even paid it off yet and suddenly they can hardly afford to drive it.

America has enjoyed a high standard of living for a long time. At first our fertile farmlands was the source of our easy life. A much smaller percentage of Americans worked in agribusiness because our land was so fruitful and American consumers spent a smaller portion of their earnings on food than other nations. Then cheap energy allowed us to push our food cost even lower and cheap transportation allowed economy of scale to lower the cost of almost everything. Cheap food and energy is what allowed America to enjoy an unprecedented standard of living. Now much of this is going away.

Lucky yanks. We pay $2.12 per liter, and I think there are about 4 liters to the gallon, so thats like $8.50 per gallon. So you're still half our price.
