Tough one. The defining factors vary greatly depending on what side of the spectrum you stand on.
For example, a botanist will describe a fruit as the ripe ovary of a flower, and the seeds of the flowering plant are found inside the fruit.
The word vegetable is used mainly from a grocer standpoint to describe anything that's basically, not a fruit. Tomatoes often fall into the vegetable category in a grocery store because it distinguishes from the sweeter flavour of an actual fruit, however, it is a fruit. A carrot, although often considered a vegetable, is actually a root.
In the end, the technical division between fruit, vegetable, root, and berry is determined by the part of the plant it comes from.
Usually, it's just easier to say that fruits have seeds and vegetables don't.

Okay, so I know I am 20, and I am serioously asking this but, what are the defineing factors between a fruit and a veggie? I was told that tomoatoes are considered a veggie now. I thought the seeds determined the fruit or veggie status.
