I think there are levels of friendship. A friend can be little more than an acquaintance or a friend could be someone with whom you are so close with that you share an unwavering, lifelong bond. The best of friends can be trusted with your heart and your well-being. You can tell them anything and they will not be judgmental but be objective and fair. They can be trusted because they always speak the truth. They will allow you to make your own decisions and your own mistakes, as long as they aren’t catastrophic, and will be there to support you should you fail. They thrive on seeing you excel, even when you overshadow them, because life is not all about them, it is also about those they care about. They reach down and pull you up when you are troubled. They praise you when you’ve done well and correct you when you have not. A good friend is what everyone wants but what everyone does not always see. Sometimes we drive them away because we ourselves aren’t good friends. A good friend will be surrounded throughout life by good friends. When the final day arrives and his casket is lowered into his grave he is again surrounded by his good friends who mourn his loss, because he was a good friend himself.
