A good one I found was Spotify its free but the difference is you dont actually download the music just listen to it. The reason I use it is that I have gotten viruses from limewire before and messed up my computer. also downloading unliscensed music from limewire is illegal.

Limewire is working fine for me at the moment. I have had problems with Limewire before but that was because my Download file was on my usb external hdd which I didn't realise was not connected. So I'd check your download folder is accessible.
But if that doesn't help with your problem try Frostwire. It is identical to Limewire, it just has a chat userface and handles torrents a bit better
