when both the numerator and denominator have a common term that they can be divided by, you do that until it can no longer be divided by any common term...

so like:

2/13 can't be divided by anything so its already in lowest terms...
but
16/24 can be divided (by 8 you get) 2/3 so now its in lowest terms...

get it?

find the greatest number that can be divided into both the denominator and numerator...
example 24/33
both 24 and 33 can be divided by 3
so the answer is 3and8/11 ths.
