There are examples in both the old and new testaments in regards to fasting. Fasting is going without food for a pre chosen length of time. The purpose for fasting is to be used in conjunction with prayer. That's why fasting and praying are used together. It's more for the purpose of showing the serious nature of the issue you are dealing with. And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,Acts 10:30 The idea being that you concentrate on God and not on self.

I agree with gasmans explanation above, and would add that fasting is designed to help clear confusion, and to allow the spirit to get stronger. It helps to silence the fleshly nature and thought processes, and it shows God that you desire to hear from him, more than you desire to eat. It also helps to break down strongholds, that one might be dealing with. It helps to bring solutions to problems, that seem to have no solution.
