One percent of teenage girls in the U.S. develop anorexia nervosa and up to 10% of those may die as a result.
Anorexia can lead to...
* Osteoporosis, which results from a lack of calcium in the diet as well as too much cortisol and too little estrogen in the body. The teenage years are critical bone-building years.
* Joint injuries, from too much exercise.
* Fractures, which are common in female athletes who have an eating disorder and also have osteoporosis and irregular menstrual cycles (known as the female athlete triad).
* Anemia.
* Kidney function problems, often caused by ongoing dehydration or abuse of laxatives.
* Heart problems such as a slow or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and low blood pressure (hypotension).
* Cavities or tooth decay.
If left untreated, many of these conditions can lead to death. Up to 15% of people who have anorexia will eventually die from complications of malnutrition or from suicide. 3However, restoring healthy eating habits and good nutrition can reverse many of the complications of anorexia.
Starving yourself won't keep the weight off. Because face it, your body needs nutrition to survive. It's like trying to run a car on no gas... you save on gas money but you're not going to go very far are you?
You should eat EVERYDAY - 6 small meals. Then your body doesn't go into starvation mode and doesn't store FAT because it anticipates food. And it should be healthy food. Check out the Abs Diet. It has some good diet tips and exercise tips. Also check out Women's Health Magazine. Anorexia won't get your body fit for life... you just get unhealthy and malnourished ... and possibly die.
