Escargo is a french dish that is cooked snails, but it does not translate into the word snail though.

It is a French word but it also is defined as an edible snail. (dictionary.com)

An edible snail, especially one prepared as an appetizer or entrée.

For most people, when you say Escargot, they know that you are talking about snails.
