Mine hurt a lot but compaired to the pain of contractions you get over it pretty quickly lol. It felt just like what it was a long needle going throuhg your back. There was awkward pressure and pain from it, but after a while you just felt better its hard to describe, you dont feel back to normal by any means but its just easier to deal with. The only analogy I can think of is like taking midol when you have your period, it doesnt take all the pain away it just makes it bearable.
Hope that helps
There is no pain when they insert it or take it out. They do it between contractions. Some doctors will give you a low dose of the medicine so you can feel when you need to push and while you are pushing. Or if you are getting a c section they give you more medicine. Your legs will go numb when the medicine is working. The afteremath can be horrid though. After mine I had a shooting back pain that made it impossible to walk or sit even with pain pills. It was no fun. Then days later I had leg pain from my thighs down. But that was with my 2nd epidural. With my 1st I had a somewhat sore back a couple days after. It all really depends on the person.
