I fly quite a bit and I also have really feck up ears that can pop from just jogging up some stairs.

Yawning and swolling helps because it opens up the tubes that connect your middle ear to the outside air, thus equaling the pressure.

If it gets really bad (don't fly with a head cold they don't pop for about 2 weeks after the flight) open your mouth as wide as you can and swollow at the same time, you may have to hold your moth open with your hands. Yer you look like a fool, but it does work very well.

An alternative to chewing gum would be sucking on a hard boiled piece of candy/sweet.
