How do you do dreadlocks?

how do you do dreadlocks? no way am I thinking about getting them, but I watch american idol and jason castro has them and I was wondering how to do them...they dont look braided so I have no clue. washing curling drying straightening and fixing hair except my own is my entire hair knowledge basically haha. also how do you wash hair with dreadlocks in it?

Since you aren't planning on doing it I'm not going to copy the steps in here but these are the products used:
1 quart of tap water
Beeswax or pomade
Fine-tooth metal combs
1 tablespoon of vinegar
Hairstyling software
Rubber bands
Hair accessories

And they are just washed like normal hair but its suggested to wait a few weeks after the whole process to wash them.

you take 1 cm sections of hair and perm it on the tightes roller with out neautralising it, this is to damage the cuticle layer of the hair you then back comb it or tease it and twist it inbetween your palms the actual length of the hair will shrink to less then half its original length it is very damaging and has to be cut out...
