Downloading ps1 games and having it work

I wanted to know if any one knew what im doin wrong me and my boyfriend download ps1 games and try to get them to work but they never do I think we need a emulator or some thing but neither of us have any clue how to set it up can some one help and explain it simply lol I aint good with computer stuff
