Dog pregnancy - pain pill?

;]] Asked by preciouslove 3 months ago, 8 answers.

My dog, Echo, is pregnant.. and I would hate to see her in pain while having puppies. My friend told me she has dog pain pills. Is it OK to give her a pain pill when she starts going into labor? Or is that bad for the pups?

They do not give pain pills during birth for your dog. Do not give your dog anything that will interfere with her delivery.

I am glad you said you would check with you Vet first because they would not give you anything that could cause her to lose the puppies. Pain pills could cause the puppies not to breath because the pills would drug the pups. Make them sleepy or not breath at all.

She will be alright.

You don't give your dog anything unless it was specifically prescribed by the vet.

They usually manage to give birth without anything for pain.

I think it would be alright if she had some pain pills but I would get them from a vet and not your friend because you would not know how much to give her and everything.

A thought to remember...
you are worried about the pain your dog might endure...
perhaps having her spayed after this pregnancy would be a wise choice...
that way you will never have to worry and she will be happier, healthier and live longer if spayed...

Teri yakie--no, it is NOT ok. Dogs and cats are different and both are born with the ability to give birth *without* the help of opiods. I hope the medication you gave your cat was prescribed by a veterinarian. If not..your lucky your cat delivered all of the kittens safely, AND that she is still alive at all.
As in humans, dosing of opiods (narcotics, I.e. Pain pills) is based on size, weight, and if any other health concerns are present. The smaller the pet, the less amt of pain medication is needed to give the same effect.
Giving a pet ANY medication that is *not* prescribed specifically for *That* pet is negligent.
I also agree with Utopia, with the over abundance of animals on this earth it would be a good idea to spay your dog after she has recovered from her delivery. This will help her and will not bring anymore dogs into this world that could potentially be abandoned, abused, or end up in the pound.
Remember to think adoption first if you decide you want another pet in the future. There are *SOOO* many little sweethearts out there *right now* just begging for good
