Does my hamster have wet tail?

The Bean in Chicago my hometown Asked by mariachitown 6 months ago, 8 answers.

I just got a syrian hamster, three days ago. He's got a stink and a wet bottom now, but he's still eating a lot! He's the funniest thing he sleep walks and even sleep eats. Good thing he does not sleep run on the wheel, lol! So, he's sleeping on top of...

his food, and eating it every now and then. Mom asks if she can see him, so I get him in a ball and she looks at him. I notice the wet tail. I AM SO SCARED!!! She said he is NOT going to the vet, and that I'm making a big deal over it. I don't know what to do! I know it's deadly, But I don't know if it's pee or wet tail. Should I wait and see if it does away? He just CAN'T die, I spent a ton of money on him and I love him a lot! He never bites, let's me pet him, and is really mellow and sweet, unlike my dwarf, who was just plain mean. Please answer ASAP.

Well, it's hard to say...if he does have wet-tail, he will most likely die within 48 hours.

Wet-tail is caused by the hamster being in a stressful situation...that includes too much handling, a dirty environment, change in diet, etc.

These are symptoms of wet-tail:
Wet bottom
Foul odor
Diarrhea
Sleepiness
No appetite
Sleeping more than usual
Not grooming
Hunched back

You can get treatment for wet-tail for only $6...they are tablets you place in his water.

I picked him up and put him on his food pile, and he ate. I have not found any caked up poop on his bottom, so I don't really think that he has it. I think he probably just went pee. Thanks so so so much for the answer ichibanarkly! I think he has a pretty nice cage, and it is definantly clean!
Here are the symptoms I saw in him.
Wet bottom, yes
Foul Odor, My sister who I share a room with says yes.
Diarrhea, I don't think so...
Sleepiness Well, I have had a throw up bug, so I have not been able to see him at night. But he does everything in his sleep during the day. And no I did not visit him while I was sick. My five siblings did for me.
Boy he's got an appetite. Maybe he's eating by accident because he's sleeping... LOL that's almost funny!
I have only seen him groom himself on the way home from the pet place, I think he was nervous. He did it a few times though.
I don't know how often he sleeps, I have not really seen him that often.
I am afraid he is kind of hunched back, but he's sleeping right now. I'll watch him at night to see if he's unhunched.
I lost his water bottle, and I just found out it's in my Dad's car, which he is using right now. I have been watering him with a medicine/eye dropper that is very very very very well cleaned. It's really sweet and cute to see him drink right out of my hands and let me hold him. I think he trusts me. Don't get me wrong, I have made hours of research on how to cure it, and I know not to hold him for stress and pain. But I don't think he has it. I'll wait till tonight to see if he's any better. I'll keep you posted!

thanks so much!!!

I wiped his bottom with a really soft tissue, and I brushed him with a brand new soft toothbrush. He looks pretty good right now...

I think he's fine. He peed, LOL! I love animals so so so much. See, he's eating and running and I have not found poop, his rear dried up and he never makes any pain noises when I pick him up. He's a great hamster. He's really cute I'll have to post a picture of him!
