Does dye damage your hair in the long run?

Me and my sister :) Asked by sunnmoontym about 1 month ago, 1 answer.

well first, how does dye work, does it just color the outerlayer of each hair?
then... hair grows by the roots so does that mean the new hair isnt effected?

Semi-permanent hair color just stains just the outer layer, but permanent hair dye lifts the cuticle allowing the dye to get to the shaft.

New hair from the roots isn't affected by the previously dyed hair.

By the way, I've been reading a lot of questions today about hair dye and damage... just so you know, dyeing your hair once won't really damage it.. even if you dye it regularly, every 6 weeks or so, it won't cause much damage at all. For some reason people have been thinking that after like one use you're hair will be fried bananas, but that's obviously not true. So don't be afraid to experiment with it, lol. Your hair will be fine.
