Actually, it's not 'tacky'. People do lots of different things before or during intercourse for pleasure. Whatever makes you both feel comfortable, and allows you to both enjoy what you are doing, while no one is getting hurt or is uncomfortable, is great. It's your business and no one else has a right to tell you its wrong, stupid, or tacky. But remember, being safe (using protection, getting tested, getting educated, etc) is the most important aspect of any sexual activity.
