You don't. It's strictly a genetic disease.
But you can have the genetic predisposition and never express the disease.

Though mostly it is genetic but your life style could trigger specially type 2 diabetes.

1. Obesity
2. sedentary life style
3. Unhealthy diet

All these could overwork you are pancreas finally even leading to insulin resistance.
