You can definitely damage your hearing by listening to loud music for extended periods of time. If you listen to your music several hours a day than keep it down.
One thing I found that helps is noise canceling headphones. With noise canceling I don't have to turn the volume up as high to hear all the nuances.
Apparently, hearing is getting worse in every generation. In the past people didn't have access to really loud music unless they were actually in a band, so when they were teenagers and young adults they generally had good hearing (unless they worked with loud machinery, which had the same effect). With record players and discos, teenagers and young people had more access to loud music, more often. So hearing started to get worse in those age groups. Now that we have such powerful personal sound systems, partial deafness in young people is quite common, I've heard. It's pretty worrying. We've protected people from dangerously loud work conditions, and then chosen similar conditions for our own leisure time!
yes you can actually. This past christmas my sister got a Zune..and by the first week into the new year her hearing became muffled..so we took her to the doctor and it turned out she had burst her eardrum in her right ear. she needed medication and eardrops and no mp3 player for a while..so shes still recovering. So yeah IT CAN HAPPEN!
