Dead us casuality?

Me Asked by haybear about 1 month ago, 12 answers.

I was in my religion class and my teacher brought up the topic of war and he started saying that only BLACKS and LATINOS die in war.

I totally disagree with this. He Was making it seem like it was only blacks and latinos die in war, my argument was...

that everyone has an equal chance of dieing.

I want to know what you think about this convo ...

Your teacher is either a complete idiot, or he was trying to make some very abstract point.

Blacks make up about 30% of the US Army, but their casualty levels are slightly less than 30% since they have a smaller representation among the combat branches. Latinos are more likely to be in combat arms and their casualty rates are of a corresponding level. White casualty rates are roughly equal to their proportion of the force.

Although blacks account for 26% of Army troops, they make up a much smaller percentage of those in front-line combat units, the most likely to be killed or injured in a conventional war.

Why don't you ask your teacher exactly what he meant by what he said? Asked him to show statistics, and proofs and what not. Maybe then he'd be more specific...heck, maybe he even expected one of you to front him so he could say more...maybe you (the students) never did, and he just let it be.

All I'm saying is, before you, or even we, conclude he didn't know what he was talking about, we should first try to see exactly how much he knows about what he said. If you ask him and he shows he's got nothing on the topic then yeah...he's foolish.

we (I) did argue with him, for 30 mins. and after class he took me outside and appologised for offending me but I have to see the truth in the matter.

He also said that america bombed japan because they wanted to test their wepons, even a real student repsonded with saying japan was bombed because america didnt want to risk anoth amphibious assault and loose thousands of soldiers the teacher respond thats just another side of the story and that the japs just wanted peace and that they were already defeted

I dont even think hes aloud to teach this in school

From what you say, it doesn't seem like he offered much to actually verify his statement. In my opinion, he's just the kind of teacher who's trying to impose his views on his students, which doesn't even seem to be working.

Moreover, although I'd wish to clear this misunderstanding and provide you with true facts and statistics so you can come to your own conclusion, I've got no idea how many american soldiers have died and of what ethnics where they, and how they were sent to the front lines according to their ethnics, or even if american soldiers are sent to the battlefront according to their ethnics (I don't really think so, though you never know)!

He was probably being hyperbolic, and didn't mean ONLY blacks and latinos die in war. He probably meant blacks and lantinos die in war in proportions higher than the general population. Blacks only make up about 13% of US population, and Latinos about 14%. In the army, blacks make up between 25-30% of soldiers, but lantinos ony make about up about 10% . So if that is what he meant, he is wrong about latinos. But latino enlistment in the military has been rising steadily for the past few decades.

Your teacher is confusing a socioeconomic disparity with a racial one.

It's true that the rank and file soldiers are composed of the lower strata of society... and that these are the people who are killed during war.

The majority of KIA's are the typical white American.

A legitimate grievance is that the poor sacrifice themselves for the wars that benefit the wealthy.

They are not unrelated. While I certainly agree that higher enlistment of minorities in military is primarily due to economic issues and not race, but the fact is, there is a socioeconomic disparty along racial lines.

There is a better way of making that point.

The teacher is obviously using rhetoric to argue that war affects minorities to a greater extent than white Americans. Unfortunately... the teacher... if represented accurately here... has made some false statements to support his conclusion.

One can plot the subsets on a venn diagram and and come to a fair conclusion that neither hides the reality that the lower strata is composed of a greater number of whites... nor the reality that the minority set has a greater percentage of its number in the lower strata... nor the reality that those KIA are composed of a greater number of the lower strata. It would illustrate that the poor whites KIA outnumber any other subset.

It would be a fair representation... based on fact... not hyperbole... not agenda driven.
