Dance question: a question for doctors, dancers, therapists, ect!

Shark Atack Asked by funadvice about 1 year ago, 8 answers.

Help! Last Tuesday (In Jazz class) I did something wrong and hurt my knee. I thought it was no deal, but I think I was wrong. But, on Thursday (Mainly in Pointe class), I noticed it hurt even more. So, in a Nutcracker rehearsal, it hurt even worse. And I...

did a workshop and it STILL hurt. So, I told my mom and she said that if it still hurts this Saturday (Nutcracker rehearsal and a few workshops) then she would take me to a doctor. But, It hurts all the time and it hurts when it's straight AND when it's bent. The question is:
1. What is wrong with my knee?
2. Is it too late to fix my knee problem or am I just in time?
3. I've tried RICE (several times a day) and it doesn't work. What else can I try?
4. Any advice and anything else?

you have to stop dancing, your knee hurts (which is a bad sign) and you continue to put lots of strain on it. Til your doctor diagnoses your condition. you need stay off your knee to prevent further damage.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention that I'm not on my knee at all! I stopped dancing till Saturday Sunday for my Rehearsal and workshops. If it hurts then, I will go to a doctor. But, it even hurts when I walk or when I go up the stairs!

you might want to see if can go to your doctor earlier if that is the case, go to a minor emergency place and get it checked out or something, you dont even want to be walking around on a messed up knee that could be bad.

Stop dancing and see a doctor now. Any time you hurt yourself in dance, even if you think it is nothing, have a professional look at it. Even if they say it's nothing but it starts hurting later on, go back and have them look again. I loved to dance until I just couldn't anymore. At first I thought it was my knees, or maybe my ankles. Then I couldn't even run normally. It wasn't until years later I found out that I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. My whole body hurts everyday and there is nothing I can do except deal with it. Make sure your doctor looks at every possible cause of your pain, just to be on the safe side.

Only your doctor can really diagnose you further. We can only tell you what we think, or what we went through ourselves. Definitely do not try pushing yourself because you could do irreparable damage. Baby your knee when you walk, don't run, and no dancing. Go to the doctor and have them do Xrays. It could be a ligament or anything.

There are a number of things you could have done. Notice all the advice you are getting. Go to an Orthopedist and have it checked out. Even if it is a muscular injury, you are only making it worse by continuing to walk and climb stairs with it not being braced or casted. If it is a torn meniscus or ligament you need a doctor to examine. Convince your mother to get you to a doctor. If you go to a general practitioner he/she will send you to an Orthopedist anyway. Be sure and think about what moves you were making and describe to him/her exactly what you were doing when you injured it, not just dancing - describe whether you were twisting the upper leg, hyper extended the knee, whatever was going on when you felt the pain.
