Conifer roots

Do conifer roots grow downwards or outwards, as our neighbours tree is so close to our boundry wall which now has a large crack in it, could the roots be causing this damage?

As a rule of thumb tree roots tend to extend twice as wide as the branches.

Yeah, it's possible.
