By a works file do you mean a spreadsheet or some other file from works?

For the copy of works that I have, Works Suite 2001, it comes with Word 2000, works 6.0, Money 2001, and Picture It Publishing 2001, they all give the option when saving to save as either a Word file or as a Text file. In the case of a spreadsheet, it would be easiest as either a Text file or a CSV file.

When you go to save, in the upper left corner where it says 'File' click there, then scroll down to 'Save As'.
In the pop-up window use the pull-down to chose the file-type you want to save the file as.

Hope this helps.
