Cinder block wall

Asked by maxtraveller 9 months ago, 1 answer.

Hi I have an existing 5 1/2 ' cinder block wall and want to add vertically 3' but only 1 cinder block wide(it will basically be a frame for an an 8' gate). Do I need to strengthen w/ rebar or can I just mortar it right onto the top? I haven't yet...

removed the concrete cap piece for the wall so I don't know if the void is filled w/mortar or not .if it is would I just drill into the mortar for the rebar if in fact I do need rebar?
I'm hoping you tell me that I'm able to just mortar it right onto the top. Thanx for your time.

I'm no concrete expert, but I would definitely reinforce with rebar. If the lower was isn't filled, I would reinforce it, too, and fill top to bottom. If it is filled, I would drill out a hole for the rebar to fit into. The other thing you might try is checking with a local concrete contractor, who could give you a professional opinion rather than mine, which is probably about half baked! Have fun!
