I totally agree with angel14215. It is a case of who you're exposed to. I used to think all white people looked the same until I began to meet them. It's the same thing. You've only met a few so you haven't begun to differentiate them from each other. Persons in India can look at another Indian and tell exactly which part of the country they originated from. Same as Chinese and Japanese. A Chinese person gets offended if you call him a Japanese and it's the same with the Japanese. They are accustomed so they see the difference in bone structure and whatever else they tell themselves apart with. I don't know if this question was due to racism but it definitely was an uneducated question.
Clearly, you've never been to China or any other asian country. Do all white people look the same? African? English?
Nope.
well, that was quite ignorant of you to ask...
I agree with dude, do people from china etc think we all look the same..
They are all asian...so they all look like asians...simple
It's to do with the person doing the 'looking.' They aren't really looking properly.
Perhaps you just worded your question wrong...but I guess there's no appropriate way to ask a question like that...it will always offend.
I guess American's are so different from one another because we are, in fact, a melting pot. America was originally populated by immigrants from Europe, Australia, Britain, Africa, China, South America, etc. so we had a much larger genetic pool to begin with.
Chinese, Japanese, and other Oriental ethnicities are based on cultures that encourage their young to marry (and therefore breed) with other Chinese, Japanese, etc. So even though they have 4 or 5 times as many people in their country, they are still breeding with people that have similar genetic information...brown/black hair, tan to yellow skin, almond shaped eyes, etc.
So you can understand why some people think that Asian people 'all look the same.' We are used to seeing Caucasians with blond or brown hair, African Americans, Indians, Mexicans, etc. every day.
I personally believe Oriental ethnicities are some of the most beautiful people on earth, and what a deeply moving and inspiring culture!
So I don't think he was being ignorant, he just worded his question ignorantly.
they ar all frm th same place so they look th same. I tink jacky chan is th only1 tat looks diffrent. ha
Quite obviously they don't look the same, but when you are not exposed to as many people from a certain culture then they look the same. If I have time I'll look up the answer to this in my social psych book, but basically from what I remember, we set up certain schemas in our head about certain things. So when I say Chinese for example, you come up with a generic mental image in your head. Now without being exposed to lots and lots of people from this culture, and especially without interacting with them, you don't learn to spot subtle features that seperate people... Since you are exposed to White people or Black people or whatever, it is easier for your brain to tell people of that race apart. All races are best able to tell people apart when those people come from their own race (there are exceptions when races have been around each other enough)... This isnt about racism but simply about who you're exposed to...
I wouldn't call the question ignorant, we do tend to have a harder time distinguishing races we are not as familiar with. All he was asking was why...
