What came first, the chicken or the egg?

I reckon the egg comes first as it needs to be laid in order to have a life.

We need qualifiers. Are we considering any type of egg or only a chicken egg? That is, can we assume that the nomenclature of 'egg' as applied to all female haploid cells (ova) does not apply in this case?

If we are only considering chicken eggs, are chicken eggs those eggs laid by chickens, or those eggs from which chickens emerge?

Are we only considering modern domesticated chickens or those animals from which they derive (most commonly considered to be the red junglefowl of India and China)?

Does a single organism constitute a species? For example, if by happenstance and mutation, a chicken emerges from a dinosaur egg, but no chickens other than that individual are seen on Earth for 300 million years, does that count as the first emergence of 'chicken,' or do you need a self-sustaining population?
