it covers the entrance to the vag., so if you can stick your finger in, then you've already 'popped your cherry'
...wow people REALLY have no clue about the hymen.
The hymen usually doesn't fully cover your vagina. (otherwise how would menses pass from a girl who hasn't tore her hymen?!?!)
The hymen is a layer of tissue at the entrance of your vagina (yes, it is actually a part of the vulva, the external organs.) As a baby, the vulva and vaginal tissues don't completely divide and this is what causes us to have a hymen. (yes, some women divide completely and are born without a hymen.)
If the hymen completely covers the vagina with no perforation to allow menses or vaginal discharge to flow out, then it can be a serious health problem requiring surgery. (but you would have known this by now.)
The hymen does not just 'POP' and then go away. It will only stretch or tear significantly to accommodate whatever object is being inserted into the vagina. Most women will have some remnant of their hymen until giving birth vaginally.
Hope this helps.
