Cervical cancer that is caught early can usually be cured. If the cancer is caught very early, you still may be able to have children after treatment.

The treatment for most stages of cervical cancer removes the cancer and makes you unable to have children. These treatments include:

A hysterectomy and removal of pelvic lymph nodes with or without removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy.

Annually 14,000 women are diagnosed with the cancer and 3,900 of them die. It is the biggest killer of women of all medical conditions.

Worldwide, including 3rd world countries, half-a million women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 243,000 of them die (virtually half!!!)

I know this is VERY worrying for you, but I had to have a laparostomy (basically, you have an abnormal result, and as a precaution they take you in to have a 'sample' of your cervix removed, and yes, ouch!)

the outlook for early caught cancerous cells is positive, they can often remove the 'infected' area early on. however, at this stage, if she has had this done it is precautionary, until the results have been confirmed. I still have to have my smear done at least 12 months apart (ouch again - urch!)

however, please try not to worry. my mum had cancer (non-hodgkins lymphoma) a number of years ago, and although it's very worrying, you need to let her know you support her. I realise that it may be an anxious time, but no matter what happends, your mum is going through this...

cancer is something that people are affected by, not just the sufferers but those around them, and I know you are frightened, but just focus on your mum...statistically many men, and women are affected by cancer, but you don't want to know about this right now, others don't concern you...and that's normal.

the point is, don't think about it too much until the results come back. if they're fine, then this will give you a renewed relationship with your mum. if something more sinister is about, then you will find yourself being a person you never thought you would be. you will find yourself being supportive, upset, confused and angry, but supportive. this is your mum, and no matter what happends you will feel different.

all you can do right now, which is the important bit, is show your mum your there for her, you support her and you value her...thats all any mum wants.

listen, cancer is one of those things - the when and where factor is highly relevent...I'm a nurse so I look at things a little differently, I look on things realistically, which can often be a pain...but hey, such as life...

if you EVER ned to talk, I'm here...as a daughter of a cancer patient I understand things completly, and until you have been in that position, I'm not sure if you can truly empathise with it.

I waffle a lot!! but at the moment, just let your mum know your there, there's little point in banging on about facts and figures, they will do nothing to ease your mind...becuase afterall, no one is the same...but I want to let you know, no matter what, you're not alone in this..many peopel are here to support you...

take care, and I hope that the results are good...x x x
