Yes, it's a terribly complex problem. Researchers - and they are certainly working away! - now hold that there is not one 'cancer' but many different kinds of cancers, each with its one development rate, its own prognosis...and presumably requiring its own cure. And additionally, as pointed out above, new mutations are always occurring.

On the other hand, we do know a lot more today than only a few years ago. Not only in terms of genetical connections, but also such everyday things are lifewstyle and eating habits that can help to lessen your risk of getting some kinds of cancer.

Unfortunately, it takes a long time and a lot of trial and error to produce something that will prevent cell mutation. There are so many types of mutations causing so many diff types of cancer, sadly it may be quite awhile.
There are researchers all over the world hunting for this cure for at least ONE type of cancer, maybe in our lifetime...but if not then hopefully in our childrens.

My guess is about 40 years. It's much harder than you think. Recent studies show that aging and cancer are interrelated. Basically, our cells age and senece to prevent the build up of mutations that lead to cancer. The only way at present to prevent cancer is to speed up aging. ...uhm, that's no good either.

But within ~40 years, we should have nanotech that can operate at the cellular level, to constantly refresh the genetic code of each cell, to prevent both aging and cancer.
