I don't think leaving it plugged in and 'charging' would ruin it - in theory, as soon as the battery is fully charged it should stop charging and just run off the mains. You can 'reset' your iPod and see if that helps it - look on the Apple.com website for the troubleshooting guide for your model.
to reset it
put it on hold then off of hold.
then hold the menu and play button at the same time for a few seconds.
then try to turn it on
