Can two friends who like each other just be friends?

Me and this girl are friends but we like each other. We talked about going out but she said shes not ready because of some personal issues. She wants to go out with me but doesn't want to hurt me. Theres no chance she'll go out with anyone at the moment...

because she needs to sort herself out and get help(I don't want to say why on here) So we've resolved to be friends. But can two people who like each other just be friends? Surely theres going to be jealously etc. I'm scared its just going to backfire.

My best friend fell in love with me a while ago, for over 2 years I denied any knowledge of it but I always knew. I loved him too but I didn't feel my love was enough, I loved him because I knew everything about him and he knew everything about me because I could finish his sentences without trying and because when I thought there was some crazy man in my house downstairs or other occassions, he would be the one who came round and calmed me down.
The long and short of it is that because we knew we both liked eachother we were not just friends anymore and we wanted to make a go of things yet I wasn't sure I was ready.
Now my childhood buddy barely speaks to me anymore and where as he used to drive over at a drop of the hat and I would do the same for him, I get one text a week and see him on average once a month.
It'll break or make your relationship, take a chance, otherwise you could end up like me, still hoping after I watched the chance pass me by

ok, I had a really bad experience with that sh*t. it seriously depends on how much you like her, how much she likes you. and how strong you are, most people would have blown their own heads off if they went through what I did. being just friends with a girl you like or possibly love is almost impossible. unless your an emotional rock, which is what I though I was, but it will get to you. who you think she's going to talk to about her boyfriends that treat her like sh*t. it just depends on how much you like her
