how is physical therapy going to fix a vertebrae pressing up against a nerve sac in my back?

You're describing a herniated disc, which coincidentally I've been reading about all night. Physical therapy will help you control the symptoms, it will help you return to doing the activities you've been used to doing, it will teach you to move certain ways to not create more back strain, and it will increase your strenth and flexibility.
