Me and my friend want to become part of the buddha religion but my brother says that I have to go through some sort of ritual..is that true?

You need to take refuge in the three jewels, but it's not like a big ceremony where you go to a Temple and get 'sworn in' by a monk...you can do this in your own home. It's simply a way of dedicating yourself to your commitment.

It's recommended you research the religion first, so that you can be certain this is your path, and when you feel you are ready to follow it, you can take refuge.

There are a few different 'prayers' used in taking refuge, but one of the simplest is only three lines:

I take refuge in the Buddha,
I take refuge in the Dharma,
I take refuge in the Sangha.
