Buddhism

Asked by mrlopez about 1 year ago, 8 answers.

Anyone here a Buddhist?
I'm just trying to find out more about the religion from someone who actually lives by it, not just from reading a book.
And just maybe, that might be the right religion for me.

I'm not a buddhist, but it's more a philosophy than a religion - buddhists don't worship a god (and as such, you can be a buddhist as well as having a religion).

Are that's one of the things I didn't know.
Its more of an ideology you say.
That's something new.

Well I think I might just go to a Buddhist temple and find out more that, seems like that's the best thing to do.

correct! it's not a religion (no god!) more of a way of life.

a science in which your life (and no one else's) is the laboratory. very empirical. very pragmantic.

works for me, see for yourself.

why go to a temple? that's like a thief who's got the loot in his pocket but acts innocent!

start where you are.

(what did the buddhist say to the hotdog vendor?

A: make me one with everything!)

all seriousness aside, there are thai and cambodian temples, zen temples, pure land temples and tibetan temples. and buddhists who meet in people's homes (like many in the tradition of thich nhat hanh)

for people who want to get their feet wet at meditation, I suggest visiting a local quaker group (american friends service) who practice silent meditation and see what it's like to sit in silence with other human beings. without any trappings of thai or zen, tibetan or pure land, etc.

of course you could try it right now: the computer will still be there when you're done. just stop, notice your breathing, and sit in stillness. if your mind wanders, just return to the breath (each time within mindfulness) ...
