I remember learning about this at school. I think it has something to do with the LENGTH of the atmosphere and the way the earth turns on its axes and the colour spectrum. For example during the day we are tilted at a certain axes hence we see the sky blue but at sunrise/sunset it appears red because we are tilted differently. The colour spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) reflects this as during the day the atmosphere is longer so we see the far end of the spectrum (the blue side) and at sunrise/sunset the atmosphere is shorter so we see the other end (red)... hope that made sense. It's been a while since I studied this.
