I have a weed or plant in backyard in Colorado here that smells like black licorice! What is it?

Anise. If it is in fact anise, it's interesting that you've found some in the backyard - it would likely have been planted there at some point because it's rare to find them growing wild.

Normally, one would find them in the wild in Greece or Egypt.
