Can birth control really prevent you from getting pregnant?

Yes! with 99%+ accuracy (for hormonal birth control pills). It does it by fooling your body into thinking you are already pregnant.

Most of the time if you use it correctly, but their is still a small chance that it could fail. Apparently, even though I always used it correctly, I am that 1% that it will always fail for. My first child was conceived while I was on the pill, my second while on the patch and my third while we were using condoms.

Try not to worry though, some people are just more fertle (sp?) then other people, at least that's what my doctor told me. He suggested that I get my tubes tied that way I wouldn't have any more accidents.

But seriously it is like 99% effective.

Yes, its quite effective. But condoms should still be used at all times because B.C. doesn't at all prevent STD's.

        Simply a Rose to brighten your day,
        And maybe lessen the cares in your way;
        And also, too, to help you to know,
        That in knowing you, many others grow!

99% effective means that 1 our of every 100 women using that type of birth control will still get pregnant. The only 100% effective birth control is abstinence.

Like Stephanief987 says, you should ALWAYS use a condom when having sex, no matter if you're on the pill, patch, etc., in order to help prevent catching a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Don't ever just trust that your partner is safe until you're married and in a monogamous relationship.
