they prefer to do a pap smear, but you can get birth control without one, but they make you do one eventually.

The doctor can give you birth control basically whenever you want it. It's for your own safety and wellness no matter the reason for taking it let it be pregnancy or pain. I started on the pill when I was about 14 because I had horrendous cramps and my doctor just prescribed the pill and that was that.
And your mom really shouldn't worry, there are hardly any side effects. You may get a bit of random bleeding in the first few months but that will stop.

Pills do have some side effects, however, there are MANY different types of pills, and switching to another type will often reduce those side effects - although that might give you other side effects. You have to work with your doctor.
Good Luck!!

When you first go to the Dr, you will be asked a series of question concerning your medical history. This is normal for everyone that goes. You will be asked to undress, and a pelvic exam will be performed on you. At this time, a PAP smear will be done to test for cervical abnormalitles such as cancer. (This test will be performed yearly when you go to the MD to have your prescription refilled.)
During the actual test, a speculum will be used to open your vagina, to allow the MD access to the cervix. It will be a little uncomfortable, but won't actually hurt. When this has been done, the MD will take a little brush, and insert it into the cervix to obtain some cells from there. A little flat scraper will then be used to scrap the outside of the cervix. The material collected will be placed on a slide, and sent to a lab. Once that is collected, the speculum will be removed, and the process is complete. Results will be returned to your MD.

Hope this answers your question!
