...and it used to be known as 'manic-depressive'. A lot of people are more familiar with that name, although it is now officially 'bipolar disorder'.

The important thing to know is that it CAN be treated, and successfully. My own father-in-law was one such example.

Go back to your doctor and get him or her to explain clearly, also concerning possible treatment. If necessary, find a new doctor and get a firm diagnosis.

The disorder is well-known and thoroughly studied, and there are lots of treatment options available.

Basically you have dramatic mood swings.
One minute you're happy and the next minute you are mad, sad, depressed, etc. for no apparent reason.

I suggest you read up on the condition. You can find great informational books about Bipolar Disorder at any bookstore like Barnes and Noble or maybe library...educate yourself.

Also, it's very important to know that you are playing with fire. It's always going to be about your mood and perception of situations you are in which affect how you experience life.
I know these things because I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2004.
You need to find the right kind of medication that will replace the chemical imbalance in your brain like Lithium..
I'm not just cutting and pasting information here, this is coming from real life experience. Finding the right medicine could be a rough trial and error experience, but hang in there, once you are on an even line the suffering will have been worth it.
Stay away from ALCOHOL and DRUGS. They can even make someone in your condition psychotic, which means seeing things and hearing things etc...and interfere with med productivity.
Also, if you find yourself feeling indestructible and full of grandiosity, like you could fly, you are probably manic.
Just cooperate...Times may get hard, but please follow your doctor's directions no matter what.
Abraham Lincoln was Bipolar, and so is Britney Spears, unofficially (all of the crazy things happened during her cycling and manic episodes)... Some of the smartest people are Bipolar, Einstein was. Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams etc...
I'm happy to correspond with you about anything you would like to talk about on the subject...maybe prevent some of the pain I went through.
Also, try and have faith in a higher power...it helps...God bless.

''Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of normal mood, but in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types, based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described as the bipolar spectrum''
