Best of 2008
What do you think were the best movies and albums of 2008?
For movies I'd say:
1. The Dark Knight - The morals and ideas presented in this movie are fascinating and incredibly deep. The fact that director Christopher Nolan was able to incorporate...
such deep, philosophical ideas into a comic book movie was astounding. I loved this movie from start to finish.
2. Wall-E. - I have a soft spot for cute, charming romance movies. Having said that, I will admit that the love story which is the backbone to Wall-E's plot is by far the most charming and moving love story I've seen in the past few years. This movie also has incredible messages that span categories such as economic preservation, the obesity epidemic in America, and of course, Love. This is the best animated movie ever, in my opinion.
3. In Search Of A Midnight Kiss - A lesser known movie, but as I said before I have a soft spot for love stories. This is a romance movie with intelligence, it does resort to corny, unbelievable moments and it daringly defies cliches of the romance genre. Definitely a must see.
4. In Bruges - Also somewhat lesser known, the movie disguises itself as a typical black comedy, but hides a more complex narrative. I found the movie to be at once hilarious, moving, exciting and brilliant.
5. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button - Just saw it yesterday, and I was blown away. The movie is indeed very long, but also very fast paced. This movie has an absolutely brilliant screenplay, and it continued to surprise me and move me. Bring a tissue box to this one.
My favorite albums of the year:
1. Abe Vigoda: Skeleton - A relatively unknown band, whom I discovered on myspace. They describe themselves as tropical punk, which threw me off at first, but once I heard the music, I had realized that indeed had achieved a tropical punk sound, and that sound had compelled me from start to finish and by the end of the album I was blown away. Definitely a must!
2. Coldplay: Viva La Vida - Coldplay was never my favorite band, but I have always enjoyed their music. However, with the release of Viva La Vida, they are now a band that I will pay much attention to. With this release they brought a much needed ingredient to mainstream music: originality. Each song is dripping with beauty and excitement. With each passing song I feel as though I'm continuously discovering something new.
3. Lil Wayne: The Carter III - I don't usually care for mainstream rap, I usually find it to be too repetitive and bland. However, Lil Wayne released one of the best mainstream rap albums ever, in my opinion, with The Carter III. Not every song is engaging musically, but each are lyrically. Lil Wayne's topics aren't always incredibly original, but he is a very witty lyricist, delivering punchline after punchline. The beats are also mostly excellent.
4. Velveteen: Home Waters - Not Much I can say, the album didn't blow me away but it still makes the list because I wasn't musically active in 2008 haha. It's still a 9/10
5. Santogold: Santogold - One of maybe 30 2008 releases I heard in it's entirety, and I enjoyed it more than 25 of them.
