Background checks

I've been out of the job market for about three years and before that I worked for 10 years at a restaurant. I've recently applied for a job as a teller trainee at a bank and they required my social security number to do a background check. What exactly are they checking for? What does a background check entail?

I don't know how extensive the background check would be, but part of what they're looking for no doubt is any criminal history or character issues....they must protect their own as well as their client's interests
