I have been one for many, many years. (I was raised Protestant, Sunday School, Choir, Bible studies, etc.)
Religion didn't make sense.
Especially when it tries to pass off religious writings as some sort of scientific truth.
Right wing religions are killing peoples belief in religion by ranting that Creationism and ID (Intelligent Design) are science. Only someone who is blinded to reason would ever think that.
I think that religion and science could co-exist in their separate regions of thought. but when religion tries to say it is a science, it simply reveals its own fanaticism.

Meee =] Just started thinking about it lots over the last year... I was brought up in a catholic school and everything... but then there seemed to be a lot of 'unanswerable' questions... so I started to read up on atheism a bit... And I know quite a lot about it now.

There are lots of reasons why I decided to be an atheist... it would take quite a while to cover them all =]

Same here, have been one for 3 months now. I have many reasons but my main was my mom and everyone I knew as a Christian out here forced it onto me,especially in arguments they always threw it on me and in June I told my mom while she was standing next to me that I have decided to become an Atheist.

She told me she doesn't respect them but I told her it's MY choice and she has no option but to accept it. That and there is now exact proof of this so cal *God* that people worship,I'm still doing some studying on the religion but I'm committed. happy

I've been one for about 2 years now, my dad is a bad @ss theology studier, and he dedicated his whole life to god and I wondered why and he kept telling me these great things jesus did, and none of it made sense, so I looked up on it some more, and I found out my oldest brother was atheist also, so I followed him and he made me feel secure about it and now I have some links for you, go on youtube and type in Penn and Teller the bible is bull crap and watch that for more stuff also go on these links if you want more contradictions in the bible and stupid stuff from it

I'm an atheist, though I grew up religious. There seem to be a lot of people these days calling themselves atheists because it's kind of the cool thing to do. But in my case, I lost faith after years of historical, and theological research and philosophical contemplation.

There just really isn't anything to all the god claims.

I was brought up Presbyterian. My mom went to college when I started Kindergarten and classes in history, philosophy, and logic destroyed the foundation her faith was built on.

I grew up thinking Atheists were evil criminal malcontents bent on ruining the world for all the good God fearing people. When my mom told me that she lost her faith and no longer believed in God I was shocked but knowing that she is a kind and generous person I could no longer think of Atheists as evil. I tried to think objectively if God existed. For a rough 2 weeks I vacillated between thinking Christianity was preposterous and praying as hard as I could for God to forgive me. In the end reason won over myth, superstition, and fear and I quit believing in God.

No atheist is actually fully 'atheist' in my opinion. If you don't worship any god, you are bound by other things such as TV, shopping, gadgets etc.and the most pernicious and widespread of all, the worship of the self. It is endemic especially in capitalist culture. Even though I am not a believer in god I have other gods of a different nature and a different place of worship. Any thoughts on that perspective?

Don't agree with you on that bmmc_84.

People who worships gods are also bound to TV, shopping, gadgets etc...

As for me, I am currently agnostic but slowly it seems moving towards atheism, the more I read about religion and argue the topics and hear about what people belief, the less I am inclined to believe that any deity exists.

I agree that people who worship god or gods are also bound to material things. What I meant was that no-one is exempt from worshipping 'things', believers or non-believers. Am I take worship to mean something wider than the religious definiton and with varying degrees of attachment.

I'm agnostic but everyday I get closer and closer to atheism. If I have to endure just one more religious rant from some hypocritical maniac, that may be all it takes. lol happy

The whole god deal is just a load of superstition from creation myth, prayer, to satan.

I don't believe in god because it's basically irrational, inconsistent and everything is better understood without god in it.

A few other reasons are:

SCIENCE

Star and Planet formation - In general, we know how this occurs by inferring from the evidence
we have observed stars in the process of forming, and matter and debris revolving around stars.
Abiogenesis - The earliest life would have derived from self-replicating molecules that developed in earth's young conditions.
Evolution - Who was it that said, ''Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of Evolution.''
The fossil record and the evidence show that life, including humans, has evolved.

HISTORY

Throughout the ages myths, gods and superstition have been used to explain things people didn't understand and were ignorant about.

The more that was found through science, the more the superstition subdued.

I was brought of Baptist (gag), and then I decided that the whole religion seemed too closed-minded, so then I started studying other religions. I decided that there were so many options, that the likelyhood of any of them being true was false, so I went atheist. My dad freaked out about it, my sister called me stupid (but now she's agnostic, so I win :D), and my aunt refuses to speak to me. I'm glad I converted, though. It just prooves how close-minded my family is and how I should never waste my life being like that. I'm perfectly content with my decision.

I don't believe in God because belief is only necessary when we don't know. If I don't know, then it is better to just say I don't know than to say I believe.
