At what age should people get a checking account?

What age is appropriate to open a checking account for my son or daughter? I want to make sure they know enough about managing their money to not be charged a billion dollars in overdraft fees. When did you all get a checking account?

I had a checking account since I was a couple months from sixteen, when I had a job, and my parents decided if I wanted something, I had to pay for it myself. I can do bills, and order things ( w/permission of course)

but as soon as you think they're old enough to handle responsibility, and to have a need for one, is probably the best time.
