There's usually something that's attracting them, or they are trying to get away from something like rain. If it's rained a lot in your area, they're looking for dry shelter.
We once had raccoons born in our attic. After they were a little bigger, I put on loud music in the attic with a radio and put small pans of ammonia around the attic. It got rid of the coons. I didn't remove the ammonia pans and we had terrible ant infestation in the attic, I finally associated it with possibly the ammonia, which was dried up by that time, but they were all over the pans. I removed the pans and the ants disappeared. So examine something new you're doing you haven't done in the past, if it's not raining a lot.
ants in large numbers like that usually mean they have found a water source..ants NEED water to reproduce, so if maybe you have a dishwasher or some other appliance that is either leaking or condensating, thay may be using that source for their water requirements...leak under sink maybe? watch them move, they will develop a little pathway from the water to the queen , if that s the reason they are there, and that could help you track down their supply...
Make sure that all food is properly sealed (they can get through plastic wrap so use containers with lids.
I had an ant problem last year and I cleared it up by dusting around all the baseboards in the house with baby powder. The ants refused to walk over the powder. Not long after, they just disappeared and I swept up the baby poweder.
