Popping the cherry refers to the hymen. The hymen is a thin layer of tissue that covers the vagina partially or fully. Some women are born with one, some without. So it is not an indication of virginity. The hymen breaking and tearing is what causes bleeding when a women first has sex. After a while it erodes but might still be slightly there.
