Anemia?

gorgeousssssssss Asked by nachoninja 4 months ago, 4 answers.

In May I tried giving blood for the first time in May, and they said they couldn't take from me because I didn't have enough iron. I've tried eating more spinach and cereal, but I'm still pale(I am in the sun all day, but I look like albino snow),...

tired and spot instead of having a real period. How serious can this get? Should I talk to my doctor about this? Where can you get iron pills? I haven't seen any at any store. Do I need a prescricption?

A blood test will confirm any suspicion. However, treatment is limited based on what causes it. This can range from blood loss to changes in diets, but ultimately you should seek the opinion of a doctor.

If it's caused by diet, eating green leafy veggies or red meats can help, as well as seafood, dried fruit, and whole grains. Mostly, your body is best able to absorb iron from red meat, so it's recommended that you eat small portions of meat with other sources of iron. Vitamin C can also help the process of iron absorption, so in the morning when you eat cereal, drink a glass of orange juice. Or with dinner, drink lemonade. On the same note, be careful of foods that block iron absorption. These foods include coffee, tea, egg yolks, milk, fiber and soy protein. You may eat these things, but in moderation and never with another food serving as a source of iron.

Some doctors will also suggest taking an iron supplement. You can find iron pills in most stores, but you should know that as with anything, too much of it can cause problems. Start slowly and take them with food, but a doctor will give you more specific instructions based on his assessment.
