I am going to assume you are talking about a dog. Give it lots of love, feed it and meet its sanitary needs. Spend time with it, one on one developing a role for yourself as leader. The dog needs time as a puppy to socialize with other dogs and people so it can develop a healthy sense of self and not be unnecessarily agressive.
Some dogs are just not going to be protective, others may be too protective. There are good books that can tell you how to do this in a caring way. I suggest you start with one that tells you about the breed of dog you have.

just care for it and be kind to it. if your in danger it will sense your fear and protect you. unless it's a little dog then it will p*ss all over and run to the nearest corner. haha
