Why are people always asking, "am I pretty?"

I wish people woud stop asking dis question!!!

they are obviously just looking for attention cause most of them that ask already look like frickin modles!!!

(Narcissism is so very unattractive, when that question is asked I get reactive. It turns a good looking person into a hag, and the effect makes me gag.) Hah! I made a rhyme.

Some people have a serious problem with self esteem and self confidence so need constant reassurance to make them feel good.

The problem with this is that if 99 people reply and say they look great and one person replies and says they are ugly, they will ignore the 99 others and just react to the response from the 1.

They often do not do this to be 'attention seekers' but that is often how those with good self esteem will interpret what is basically a cry for help.

These people can be helped but only with professional counselling.

I know it can be annoying when these type of questions appear on this site but all I ask is that you perhaps try and see it through their eyes and not make a snap judgement that they are attention seekers.

Many of these individual have grown up with friends and families constantly putting them down, telling they are worthless and ugly until this becomes so ingrained, they just accept it and believe they are worthless and ugly people.

I think this is a very sad situation, however, sympathy is not the answer, politely suggesting that they seek professional help (like those who are real skinny that think they are fat) would be far more constructive advice in such situations.

There is no quick fix and even with professional support, progress can take a long time. After all, many of these people had these thoughts forced into them during their first 10 years or so of the most influencial part of their lives.

Just my opinion based upon managing a homeless hostel where many people felt this way about themselves.

I agree with you in some situations, but, as kiasu said, a lot of people have self esteem issues, and you wouldn't want them to sink down lower with other people criticising them. If you don't like it, just don't look at those questions. If you reply negatively, you just make them feel worse about yourself- if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all, as my mum says.

This was not a criticism of your question. I know that a lot of people feel the same as you do about people asking this type of question.

I just wanted to post an alternative look at the issue so you can see both sides to this.

People with low self esteem will often look for comments criticising themselves to confirm what they already believe.

EG, They may have 58 comments telling they are very pretty and not to worry and 2 comments saying they are ugly. Guess which comments they listen to which devastates them?

They don't chose to be this way, they have something called a core belief in their subconscious telling them that they are ugly and worthless (eg) and everything they see, say, think, hear and do is first filtered through this core belief.

It is terribly disabling.

I think you are very lucky to have good self confidence and be at peace with your looks and your thoughts.

Unfortunately, not everyone has had an upbringing that allows them to be like that.
