Advise on how to help my friend

my friend is a little depressed and he thinks his life is going nowhere. what can I do or say that will help prove him wrong?

tell him to have hope and tha t god has a plan for him and that hes a great person and stuff

If this is what he truly believes there is nothing you can say that will prove him wrong, however you can point out some of his accomplishments, suggest things you admire about him, ask what he would like to have different in his life and offer to help him reach those goals.
