Well, in your case, it's the correct spelling and the wrong spelling. At least you got republicans right! (That does not mean I'm a republican!)

Easy answer. At the core its the following:

Republicans believe in small government that does not interfere too much into the marketplace, nor people's lives.

Democrats believe that government is a tool to help people reach their full potential.

Of course things are not so simple :-) And those are the historical underpinnings of each movement. Republicans are now in full mode of using government to spy on us and determine who we should marry and what we should think, thus repudiating their historical platform.

Democrats are pretty much republican lite now.

So there you have it my intrepid friends. The only thing that's constant in this world of ours is change.

Republicans are usually materialistic, rigid, staid and resist change, especially if it is not in their best interests.

Democrats are usually more liberal and embrace change that will be beneficial to all.

Some of you are really defining the difference between conservatives and progressives, not Reps and Dems. While the party's general fall into separate ideologies, there is much overlap. There are many liberal republicans, and many conservative democrats.

The core difference is this. Republican/conservatives believe that governement should basically only provide for the common defense, infrastructure (rails, roads, bridges, etc..), and protection (police). They believe government should take a hands off approach to business, with little or no regulation.

Democrats/Liberals believe that the overall purpose of goverment is to protect, defend, and maintain well being of the people. That includes regulating corporations so they can not use their power and money to take advantage of the people. They believe govenrment can and should provide for the commons. This includes our military, police, infrastructure, and also for education, health care, housing, and assistance for the poor.

Basically, Reps only care about keeping corporate power in place, and Dems only care about protecting the people.
