2012 rumor

I've been hearing a lot of stuff how the worlds going to end in 2012, and I know it's not true, but I'm just wondering how did the rumor start?

You can understand what rockerchick means? Because most of it was wrong, and the rest of it was nonsense, so if you are able to glean some meaning out of it, you definitely need to get a job in cryptography.

While the exact reason the Mayan civilization came to an end is not precisely known, they didn't simply up and vanish one day. There was a period of of decline where the power structure of the cities collapsed over a period of about 100 years, and they were subsequently abandoned. The theories why range from political corruption to famine, but there are about 7 million ancestors of the Mayans walking around today who would be quite surprised, rockerchick, to find out they had disappeared off the face of the earth.

It is a common misconception that it was the people that came to an end. It wasn't. It was the civilization that collapsed. The people are still here.

Incidentally, I can only get the calendar on my computer to go up to 2099. Does that mean the world is going to end in 2100?

go into my advice...like mine not just what it says at the top I think you can do that from my page and there was a topic on here like this it starts with the word commercial or something like that but nostradamus, even though someone on the question tried to correct me and tell me it wasnt him, predicted stuff about 2012 like diasters...you can read more about that on the history channel and well everywhere on the web, there is also a movie coming out called nostradamus 2012...the mayians also believed the end of the world would occur in 2012, its called the apocolypse...theres a movie about that too. I think what you are seeing are commercials for that movie.

I believe the day specifically predicited by the Mayan calender is December 21, 2012. I personally don't believe it because if you think about how many times this has happened in the past, the whole the world is going to end on this day, and it hasn't happened yet. Remember New Years Eve 2000 and we're still here. My advice, don't worry about it. If the world is going to end...it will end and totally unexpectedly.

The Mayan long calendar (very ancient) ends on Dec. 21, 2012.

The lunatic fringe has decided that it must be the end of the world. Of course, a more rational explanation, is that the Mayan calendar was based on the constelations, and that by their estimation/definition, the new age of Aquarius begins on that day.

Dec. 21 is the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year, and traditionally marks the beginning of a new year (though our modern Calendar oddly moves the start to 10 days later), so it is fitting for an ancient calendar to end on that day.

well when the mayans predicted 'time' they were only half a minute out. so they must have something right...

heres the freaky thing.
The Miyans lived A VERY long time ago.
and they made a calendar that ended on December 21st 2012.
my mom reads the bible all the time.
and people who think the bibles lies. are wrong cause it predicted stuff like 9/11 and other stuff and was right.
and my mom beleives. that the world will end in 2012 because.
like I said the miyans were way smart way beyond their years. they predicted many things. and so yeah there calender ends there and then they all dissapeared. For some strange reason. The miyans SERIOUSLLY dissaperared off the face of the earth a whole bunch of scientists looked back at where the miyans lived and found no evadence of what happened. and so my mom thinks. God intended for them to make that for some reason. and then took them off the planet. cause their job was done. to warn us. and if they were to stay here and live on they would produce more information.

the whole thing started from the mayan calender. Since most of the dates on it have happened in the past most people belive it will happen.
